Good move Facebook: “send” button in addition to “like”

The Facebook “Like” button turned 1 year and has an enormous popularity across the web. Even google came up recently with basically the same concept. The new Facebook “Send” button is a very useful extension to the “like” button …

Facebook’s like button first posted a single line to your wall, recently it started to copy the whole story + thumb of the site you liked. Plus the fact the posting went to the news feed of ALL your friends. I think some users were not happy with that. I wasn’t particular fond of the idea either.

You could of course always use the Share button to post something to your wall and select “send message instead” to send an article or link to certain people. But there are not  that many share as like buttons and it requires some additional steps.

Now this works a lot more obvious and user friendly with the introduction of the “Send” button. It is all javascript overlaying various dialogs, you never go away from the page you want to share!

You can use it as an individual button, but Facebook would not be Facebook if something easy and (!) backward compatible would not be available. As Facebook’s comment box plugin had migrated=1 added to upgrade existing plugins, Facebook lets the thousands of sites that have the Like button, add the additional send button alongside the like button by just adding send=”true”

Code

<fb:like width="100" layout="button_count" action="like" font="lucida grande"
send="true"></fb:like>

OR, simple use the Send button alone:

<fb:send ref="homepage"></fb:send>

(assuming you added the necessary FB script before: )

<script src="http://connect.facebook.net/en_US/all.js#xfbml=1"></script>
How does it look

I rolled it out to sharemovi.esmy reading list and this blog. It works like a charm:

The friend(s) you send the content to gets it in his/her Facebook inbox. You can also use the email alias of a Facebook group to easily share content across Facebook groups, I did this to post this article to my blog group:

Customize

To control what image you see in the shared message, the tittle and description, etc, check out the Open Graph meta data elements at Facebook’s api dedicated page and/ or my post Let Facebook “Like” button pick the right image!

    Have you gotten the ref to work? its not registering for me. I have tried both for fb:send and fb:like.. for fb:like its working when actually like:ing but not when pressing send.

    Ok. found it. “We report referral clicks on the Insights dashboard. In the coming weeks we will add the ‘ref’ parameter to the plugin (see “Attributes” above).” … so its not actually implemented yet
